The key to making sure you receive the best health care in Australia is to ensure you get it from the right place, according to the health professional who helped develop the nation’s national health system.
Key points:The National Health Service was created in 1966 and has undergone two major changes since thenThe NHP is run by the Department of Health and AgeingBut the Department is facing a crisis of confidence and the National Health System (NHS) needs to be rebuiltMr Dyson, who was formerly the president of the Australian Medical Association, said there was a growing need to ensure all patients received the best possible care.
“We need to do it in a way that maximises the number of people who can receive it, that minimises the costs, that maximizes the benefit,” he said.
“I think what’s needed now is a new national health strategy, a new National Health Plan, with the intention to put the National Healthcare Plan in place, that’s how we’re going to be able to achieve that.”
Mr Dison said the key was to ensure there was the right team and resources to support that strategy.
“That’s what’s happening now, and that’s what will be going forward,” he added.
“What we need to make clear is that there will be a National Health Strategy.
There’s going to have to be a national health plan.”‘
People will get better’Mr Denny said it was not the time for complacency.
“There will be people who will get worse, but there’s going in a different direction,” he told ABC Radio Melbourne’s The Week in Review.
“People will be better.”‘
We’ve got a long way to go’Mr Paine, who worked for the Government for 25 years, said the new system was a critical step in creating the health care system of the future.
“It’s the first step,” he noted.
“The Government’s got a lot of work to do and there’s still a long ways to go.”
He said the system needed to be more transparent, but acknowledged it needed to evolve in a “new and exciting way”.
“We’ve still got a good way to do things,” he conceded.
“But I think what people will get a better understanding of is how much money we’re putting into the system.”
Where we can do more is to have more transparency.
“And also the fact that we have a system where people get good quality of care, and they get good care at a price, which is what we want to encourage people to do.”
