At least 11 veterans died while awaiting care, according to state data.
The VA reported that veterans were waiting more than 12 days to see a doctor in the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs.
VA spokeswoman Jennifer Hickey said the agency has been working to get those patients back to the front lines as quickly as possible.
Hickey also said the VA is continuing to investigate a new case of infection, though it’s unclear if it’s linked to the recent deaths.
Rick Scott, who announced he would seek re-election next year, is asking for $10 million to expand the VA medical network in the Sunshine State.
Scott said he plans to seek additional federal aid for the state’s health-care system in the next few weeks.
Scott is facing a challenging re-elect campaign.
He’s running as a conservative populist who wants to expand health care in Florida and is against the Affordable Care Act, which he says is killing jobs.
