Gavin Newsom has said he’ll shut down all state-run homelessness centers.
But he has been unable to stop the federal government from clearing out the state’s homeless services centers.
This is not an idle threat.
A lot of the homeless services are already closed.
“It’s not a good situation,” Newsom said.
“I’m not saying it’s a good scenario for the homeless, but it’s certainly a bad situation for us.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says about 8.7 million people are homeless in the United States, and about one in five is chronically homeless.
As Newsom says, “it’s just a matter of time before there’s a national epidemic.”
