Health care lawyer Michael Schoeffler says the United States has become the most expensive country in the world to treat a patient with COVID-19.
“If you were a person in the United Kingdom, and you were sick, you could be treated in the NHS but not the US,” Mr SchoeFFLER said.
The US was ranked 15th on the WHO’s global ranking for the most-costly countries to treat people with COV-19, down from 24th last year.
Despite the dramatic drop in its COVID burden, the United State still ranked among the top five countries in terms of COVID costs.
But the WHO is concerned that the number of people in the country with the virus is rising.
Health care experts said it was important for the United Nations to be more active in addressing the issue of COV in the coming months.
In the past month, the WHO has released a series of recommendations, including: a declaration of a national public health emergency; a new public health strategy; an urgent call for global collaboration to contain the spread of the disease; and a call to strengthen the national capacity to respond to cases.
A coronavirus pandemic is set to begin in the next few weeks.
