A post on reddit.com entitled How much does it cost to get health care, and how much does the average person pay?
was picked up by BuzzFeed News, which said the article showed that the average US household would pay about $4,500 to cover their basic health care needs, a figure that was much higher than the $2,000 average.
The story was shared more than 11,000 times.
BuzzFeed News reported that the data was from the Kaiser Family Foundation.
In a statement to BuzzFeed News published on Monday, the Kaiser Foundation said it was “disappointed” by the BuzzFeed article.
The foundation said that it used a “slight methodological error” to estimate the number of people in the US who were uninsured in 2015.
“We will continue to monitor the data and look into ways to improve the accuracy of this report,” the foundation said.
The Kaiser Foundation was not immediately available for comment.”
Asking an average householder to pay nearly twice as much as the average family earns to cover basic health costs is a misleading way to compare the health system’s performance.”
